4D Plates – Everything You Need to Know
There are more variations of the British Standard registration plate on the market now than ever before, including 4D plates – the newest addition to our range of DVLA approved number plates.
We’re often asked lots of questions about what 4D plates are, whether they’re legal for use in the UK and what they’re made from. With this in mind, we’ve put together a blog to answer all of your questions about 4D plates. Read on to learn more!
What are 4D Number Plates?
A 4D reg plate features raised letters and numbers that are made from laser-cut acrylic and stand proud from the reflective plate. This adds depth to your number plate for an eye-catching, fresh and stylish look.
Are They Legal?
Are they legal? Yes, the 4D (3D) design of a number plate is 100% legal on the road. The government website clearly states ‘Characters on a number plate can be 3D’. Registration plates need to be produced by a registered number plate supplier, with many offering the 4D style. Here at Plymouth Radiators, our 4D laser cut number plates are road legal, MOT compliant and conform with all BSAU 145d/e standards, so they can be used anywhere in the United Kingdom and can be created whilst you wait.
The 4D plates are still required to follow the regulations made by the DVLA. The plates on the vehicle must be made from a reflective material, display black characters on a white background for the front plates and black characters on a yellow background for the rear plates. Patterns in the background are prohibited. There are also rules for the height, spacing and size of the characters displayed, check out the Gov.uk website for more information.
What Are They Made From?
We make our plates to the highest quality, ensuring that they perform brilliantly in all weathers and elements. They are shatterproof, UV tested, safe to pressure wash and quality controlled. The lettering on the 4D number plates is made from high-quality glossy acrylic which is professionally laser cut and fixed to the plate with industrial-strength adhesive and won’t fade in the sun.
