Have you ever seen a car with a number plate that caught your eye? Perhaps it was a clever play on words, a tribute to a loved one, or a nod to a personal interest. These aren’t just random sequences of letters and numbers; they’re personalised registrations, on custom made number plates! This is a growing trend that allows vehicle owners to express their individuality.
What Are Custom Made Number Plates?
Custom Number Plates, also known as personalised plates or private registrations, are vehicle number plates that you choose specifically. Unlike standard, randomly assigned plates, these feature combinations of letters and numbers with personal significance. This could be a name, initials, a word, or a significant date.
Why Choose a Custom Made Number Plate?
There are several reasons why people opt for personalised plates:
Unique Expression: Personalised plates offer a way to make your vehicle truly yours. They reflect your personality, interests, or values.
Branding: For businesses, personalised plates can be a form of mobile advertising. They create a memorable brand association.
Investment: In some cases, custom made number plates and their registrations can be considered an investment. Certain combinations, especially those that are rare or in high demand, can appreciate over time.
How Can I Get a Custom Made Number Plate?
Personalising your vehicle’s number plate can add a unique touch and potentially increase its value. Here’s a guide on how to get your hands on a custom-made number plate:
Purchase from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency)
- Browse available registrations: The DVLA lists millions of unissued registrations, including various styles and formats.
- Check for new additions: The DVLA regularly updates its database, offering more options over time.
Participate in DVLA Auctions and Sales:
- Bid on unissued plates: The DVLA holds auctions where you can purchase unique registrations.
- Explore private auction houses: These often list previously issued plates being resold.
Buy from Private Sellers or Dealers:
- Find available plates: Many companies and individuals sell personalised plates they own.
- Seek assistance: Plymouth Radiators can help.
Complete the Transfer Process:
- Assign to your vehicle: Follow the DVLA’s straightforward transfer process.
- Prove ownership: Provide evidence that you own the chosen plate.
Have the Plates Made:
- Choose your style: Select the desired design and materials for your plates.
- Order and install: Once the transfer is complete, you can have the plates made and installed on your vehicle.
Types of Custom Number Plates in the UK
Dateless Number Plates: These plates feature a combination of letters and numbers that do not indicate the year of manufacture. They are popular for classic cars or for people who are very proud of their vehicles, but the age reflected by the number plate takes away some of the charm.
Prefix Number Plates: These plates begin with a specific prefix, often representing a region or a particular theme. For example, “BF” is a popular prefix for Birmingham.
Suffix Number Plates: These plates end with a specific suffix, which can be a combination of letters and numbers. They can be personalised to include initials, memorable dates, or other meaningful sequences.
Show Plates: These temporary plates are for display vehicles at exhibitions or events. They are not intended for road use.
What Are the Costs?
The cost of a custom number plate in the UK can vary depending on several factors, including:
Type of plate: Dateless plates are generally more expensive than prefix or suffix plates.
Popularity: Plates with desirable combinations of letters and numbers can command higher prices.
Auction or private sale: Plates purchased at auction or from private sellers may cost more than those bought directly from the DVLA.
Additional Considerations:
Transfer fees: Additional fees may be associated with transferring a custom number plate to your vehicle.
Plate manufacturing: The plates’ cost will depend on the materials and design you choose.
