Buying Your Personalised Number Plate
If you’re looking to purchase custom number plates, there is an incredibly straightforward process to follow. It’s as easy as 1 2 3!
If you want to keep your private number but don’t need to add it to a vehicle, simply skip step two. (However, you will need to renew it every 10 years.)
1. Buy a Private Number
First things first, you’ll need to buy a private number for your customised plates. You can either purchase new numbers from DVLA Personalised Registrations or bid on existing numbers at online DVLA auctions, which are held nine times a year. Alternatively, you could buy a private number from a dealer or an individual.
If you choose the DVLA auction route, you’ll receive a V750 certificate of entitlement, which serves as proof that you have the right to assign the number to a vehicle. For those who have bought through a private dealer, the number will be transferred to you. If you want to transfer the number yourself, you’ll need to request the V750 certificate or V778 retention document from the dealer.
2. Assign Your Number to Your Vehicle
Once you have purchased your personalised number, we’re sure you’ll want to add it to your vehicles as soon as possible! To do this, you will need the V750 or V778 mentioned above.
If your vehicle is registered to you, you can easily apply online or by post. Please note that if you already have a private number on your vehicle, it is essential that you apply to remove that one first. Otherwise, you could lose the right to use the number!
Additionally, we appreciate that you’ll be eager to add your custom number plates promptly, but if you have just purchased a used vehicle, please wait until the DVLA has issued a new V5C in your name before applying. Alternatively, if your car is brand new, simply provide the V750 or V778 to your car dealer, and they can apply for you!
3. Get Your Custom Number Plates Made
If you are adding your custom number plate to a vehicle, it must be made by a registered supplier.
This is where we come in! All you need to bring is proof of your name and address, along with documents to show that you’re authorised to use the registration number. Your driving licence would be perfect for proving your name and address, whilst the V750 certificate or V778 document will verify your eligibility to use it. Leave the rest to us!
