Below we have listed some of the most common areas that we check for you. Of course, there are many more things that we will also check during the process to ensure your car can run safely throughout the winter.
We offer full winter checks, including …
The health of your battery
Your car battery can often be overlooked but it is an essential part of any winter check as it is under even more stress at this time of year. Your battery is more likely to fail in the winter as the colder it gets, the slower the chemical reactions are within the battery. This means there is lower battery output capacity which can cause your battery to stop working. During the winter we naturally use more electrical components such as heating and lights, which place additional demands on the battery. You will often find this happens with the battery in your mobile phone.

Ensuring your lights are all in working order
Some people aren’t aware, but did you know that it is illegal to drive in poor weather conditions or in the dark without working lights? Not to mention that it’s dangerous! We will make sure that the lights on your vehicle are all in working order, including the headlights, brake lights, reverse lights and indicators. It’s important to remember that when visibility is reduced, you need to ensure that you can see other drivers and that they can see you as well. The last thing that you want in the winter months is to be driving anywhere with a light out. We can help!

The condition of your windscreen wipers
The last thing that you want is to have poor visibility in the rain and the snow. Here at Plymouth Radiators, we will make sure that your wipers are ‘winter ready’. We will check for any cracks in the rubber, persistent dragging across the windscreen and that they aren’t squeaking. We will also check the operation of your windscreen wash system and top up your screen wash.

Inspection of your tyres
Making sure that your tyres are in perfect condition for the winter is essential as the weather can become a lot more challenging. It’s important to remember that the condition and quality of your tyres will dramatically affect their performance. Our mechanic will check the overall condition of your tyres including cracks, bulges, pressure and tread depth.

Checking your coolant/anti-freeze
Engine-related breakdowns are often related to issues with a vehicle’s cooling system. A winter check will make sure the cooling system in your vehicle is at its best – we will also make sure your antifreeze is checked and refilled if necessary. Antifreeze is added to the water in a vehicle’s radiator to prevent it from seizing up and causing any further issues. As frozen water expands it can split engine hoses and pipes, causing leaks and reducing cooling efficiency. Our mechanic will make sure this is all in check for you.

A free wiinter check
Don’t forget! A free winter check could potentially save you hundreds of pounds. If you do not get your car checked you may be missing out on issues that could cause irreversible damage to your vehicle. Like any service or MOT, the check is designed to keep you and your car safe.
